INTERVIEW: Peruvian singer Cecilia Barraza prepares for U.S. tour
Cecilia Barraza, the well-respected and accomplished Peruvian singer, will soon visit the United States to offer her unique musical style to fans. She has scheduled dates in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Miami and New York. In the Big Apple, she will perform a July 29 set at the famous B.B. King’s Blues Club & Grill.
Barraza’s career began after she won Trampolin a la Fama, a talent competition, in 1969. According to her B.B. King’s concert page, the singer combines Afro-Peruvian and popular music, and her YouTube videos, gathering thousands of views, surely display her obvious musical talent.
Whether it’s her rendition of “Nunca Me Faltes” or “Cuando Hablo el Corazón,” Barraza’s songs are memorable for their authenticity and dynamism. More information on the singer can be found on her Facebook page.

What can your fans expect when you sing in the United States?
Una comunicación entre las canciones que hago y sus sentimientos, ya sean de nostalgia o mucha alegría. Además de reafirmar ese amor que sienten por sus raíces musicales.
Was music a big part of your life as a child? Do you come from a musical family?
Sí, fue parte vital de mi infancia y adolescencia. Mi papá cantaba con mi tío, valses y tonderos. Mi mamá también cantaba los primeros valses que aprendí.
What are your memories of Trampoline a la Fama, an important part of your musical journey?
Recuerdo que estaba muy nerviosa, por eso cantaba con los ojos cerrados, y desde luego, es importante para mi vida musical, porque como su nombre lo indica, fue un trampolín para ubicarme en un lugar preponderante en la música criolla.
How did you get interested in the style of Música Criolla?
Porque era la música que más emoción me producía y sentía que podía cantarla con propiedad.
What’s the best thing of being a successful singer? What’s the most challenging?
Lo mejor, es sentir que has podido comunicar sentimientos verdaderos a mucha gente, que los recibe con el mismo cariño que tú los brindas. Lo más desafiante es mantener una vigencia a lo largo de tantos años y que el público lo vea así.
Is there a difference in how the audience reacts during concerts in Peru and concerts in the United States?
Creo, que hay una pequeña diferencia. En Perú la audiencia vibra y en USA, la audiencia estalla. Quizás, por la distancia.
Do you enjoy singing songs of romance and love like “Nunca me Faltes”?
¡Porsupuesto! Disfruto mucho cantando esa canción y otras románticas, como tambiéndisfruto cantando y bailando el tondero, landó y festejo, que son géneros muy alegres. En general, disfruto y gozo con toda la música que hago.
