Celebrity Dish: The Grammy Awards

The 2011 Grammy Awards did not disappoint! Being an ambivalent music fan, there is one reason I still watch the Grammys: the fashion. I think that musicians and actors feel that the Grammys offer a decidedly more lax dress code than, say, the Oscars.

If artists want to guarantee themselves free press, simply show up in the most ridiculous outfit possible, and the Grammys do offer the venue for this fashion-forward fare.

Case in point: Lady Gaga. She shocked viewers by arriving in an egg-like vessel being carried by throngs of models. Gaga told Good Morning America, “I was in there for three days. … I was viva glamming for three whole days because I wanted to have a rebirth, and I think the universe needs to have a rebirth.”

When the 24-year-old singer, whose real name is Stefanie Germanotta, emerged from the prop, she did so sporting new pointed shoulder implants. While Gaga never fails to make an entrance, and somehow simultaneously comment on the social landscape, others chose to do it the old-fashioned way by wearing a nice dress and smiling for the cameras.

Those who did that boring job best this year: Jennifer Hudson in Versace and Nicole Kidman in Jean Paul Gaultier. Those who should stop trying to be a cheap Gaga knock-off: Katy Perry in Giorgio Armani and Rihanna in Jean Paul Gaultier. The basic rule of thumb of dressing for the Grammys should be edgy, without going too far, unless of course you are Lady Gaga and too far is never enough.
