INTERVIEW: ‘Saturday Church’ and the concept of ’embodied liberation’
The New York Theatre Workshop is winding down its acclaimed run of the new musical Saturday Church, with performances continuing through Friday, Oct. 24. The Whitney White-directed show tells the story of Ulysses, someone who is growing up in New York City and is the best tenor at his aunt’s church. He then has a brand-new world opened up to him when he is introduced to Saturday Church, a sanctuary for LGBTQ+ youth, according to press notes.
Damon Cardasis and James Ijames are responsible for the book and lyrics, while pop star Sia wrote the music and lyrics. Additional music comes from Honey Dijon. Their efforts have produced a show that is centered on the theme of “embodied liberation.”
Jackson Kanawha Perry plays the part of Raymond in the musical. The University of Michigan graduate previously appeared in The Karate Kid the Musical and regional shows at The Apollo Stages, Ogunquit Playhouse and Cape Playhouse. Questions and answers have been slightly edited for style.
When you first read Saturday Church on the page, what did you like about the piece?
I loved how the piece told a story about navigating both faith and queerness. I saw a lot of myself in the story of Ulysses.
How has this theatrical experience been going? Is it cool being in a hit show?
This experience has been amazing. I am blessed to be working with some of the most talented, fun and kind people. I leave the theatre fulfilled every day, and it’s nice to know that our story is affecting those who come to see it.
What do you hope the audience learns from spending a couple hours with this cast and this story?
I hope the audience learns to keep loving, and the value of family and community.
What’s it like to work with these fellow cast members?
Literally amazing! We have a great time backstage, onstage and even sometimes away from the show. The cast is made up of stellar humans.
What’s it like working with Whitney White?
She is an incredible director with great vision. When she leads a space, she has the ability to make everyone feel seen and heard. I love collaborating under her direction.
What does “embodied liberation” mean to you?
Embodied liberation is joy, is love, is freedom.
