INTERVIEW: Rock band Long Time are ‘Never Alone’

The firepower that was gathered to record Long Time’s debut full-length album, Never Alone, is being harnessed once again for the band’s winter tour. The rock trio is currently heading up and down the East Coast, with a stopover Feb. 3 at the Rough Trade in Brooklyn, New York.

Long Time consists of Thomas John Cadrin on guitar and vocals, Colin Dinnie on bass and Andrew Nault on drums. They hail from Massachusetts, but thanks to that successful album, their rock-infused reach is spreading wider and wider.

On their website, the band members state that their sound falls somewhere between punk and modern rock, a wonderful grey zone that will be music to the ears of many listeners. Their lyrics speak to a “generation of people that fears they may be the only ones who have no idea what they’re doing.”

Recently, Hollywood Soapbox exchanged emails with Nault about the tour and new album. Questions and answers have been slightly edited for style.

What can fans expect on your debut full-length album, Never Alone?

I think this release is far more telling of just who and what Long Time is as a band. At this point, our ability to write and move as a group has greatly surpassed the initial bar we set with Worth.

Did you settle on being a three-piece rock trio on day one? Does this make your sound unique compared to larger bands?

Definitely. From the very start the idea of a power trio was extremely appealing to all of us. It really allows each of our voices to carry weight and be heard. All of our parts feel more important, and it forces more choices and more creativity. Replace one, and the sound is gone. That’s the beauty of a trio.

What are your goals for the band in 2018?

Biggest thing for us in 2018 is to put ourselves in front of more people in more places — plain and simple. Second biggest is to continue the collective creativity. Keep our writing fresh and our minds busy.

Who were some of your rock or punk influences growing up?

I grew up heavily immersed in the aggressive music scene. Big players for my young ears were Bad Brains, Converge and Misery Signals, but my earliest memories are from my Pop’s collection. Neil Young’s Harvest is still one of my all time favorites along with A Night At the Opera by Queen. The Prophet’s Song is probably the catalyst that made me look for heavier music.

What inspired the song ‘River’?

‘River’ was one of the earliest songs we wrote together as a group, so I think the content really reflects that. It’s a song about moving together and alone at the same time, if that makes any sense, which is what a band is all about … and what life is all about.
