Plush have had quite the remarkable few months. The rock band has opened for the likes of Evanescence, Halestorm and Slash, and they are continuing to release singles off their self-titled debut album. The latest tune with a music video is called “Better Off Alone.” The song finds lead singer Moriah Formica rocking out to lyrics about a relationship gone bad and figuring out that sometimes it’s best to be alone.

As their website explains, Plush consists of four women, ranging in age from 18 to 21. In addition to Formica, there’s drummer Brooke Colucci, guitarist Bella Perron and bassist Ashley Suppa. Their upcoming concert dates include a stop in Arizona for KUPD U Fest, plus a spring tour with Sevendust. In the fall, fans can catch the band at Louder Than Life Festival and Aftershock Festival.

Recently Hollywood Soapbox spoke with Formica about the band’s success and the new single, “Better Off Alone.” Here’s what she had to say …

On how the song “Better Off Alone” came to be …

“Better Off Alone,” our latest single, it’s a song about being in a relationship and really trying to give everything that you have to this person and always trying to make them happy and keep them satisfied and going above and beyond, but at the end of the day, nothing is ever good enough. They’re always pissed for whatever reason. They’re always putting you down, and it’s coming to the realization that sometimes you are better off alone until you find another person that brings out the best in you instead of always putting you down.

On the fan reaction to the new album and singles …

We are so super grateful and super humbled and just honored honestly for people to be hearing our music all over. Even some in the crowds are singing the lyrics to “Hate” is a surreal feeling. It’s something that I personally haven’t wholly grasped yet, but yeah we’re really, really happy with the fan response so far.

On how the band chooses which tunes will be released as singles …

We have our own opinions and our reasons why we want a certain single, but I know for me personally, whenever I would push for a certain single, a lot of it was emotion-based and my connection to the songs and not necessarily thinking about what might be best for radio or what might be more appealing to the fans. So a lot of it comes from honestly bouncing ideas off the radio team or management and getting different opinions and weighing the pros and cons of each song and going from there.

On how the songwriting process works …

For the songwriting and stuff, I’ll bring a lot of the songs to the band, and everybody will write their parts and put their own spins on stuff and add their own flavor and stuff. Everybody puts their stamp on it, and as far as decisions, yeah everybody has a say of course. We just want to make sure that everybody feels comfortable, heard, and that we’re all happy, and that we’re all united as a team.

On what it’s like to working and playing with these bandmates …

It’s awesome, honestly. We really have all become super-close. It really is so much fun, especially … with the fact that we’re all young women is awesome too because that in and of itself kind of strengthens our bond because we have a lot in common, nd we go through a lot of the same things together in the industry and stuff.

On bands that have inspired Plush …

Evanescence and Halestorm. I really, really looked up to Amy Lee and Lzzy Hale. I mean, I still do, but especially growing up and trying to find my voice and myself as an artist. I really connected with their music, and I just loved their bad-assery and how genuine they were and still are. I just fell in love with that, and Amy Lee, in particular, is who really inspired me to take singing and run with it at a very young age.

On what it was like to open for Evanescence and Halestorm …

It honestly was really emotional. It’s crazy that it happened so fast. If it did happen, I always thought it would be way in the future, never now. It’s so, so incredible, and 12-year-old me was jumping up and down inside. It’s just something that I’ve always dreamed of when I was little. I’ve always wanted to play a show with Evanescence and Halestorm, and what do you know, we ended up getting a whole tour. So it was honestly so incredible.
