Eli Wulfmeier, a musician who has made the rounds of several bands in the industry, has recently kickstarted a new project called Leroy From the North. The first EP from the new group, dubbed Health and Fitness and recorded at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, is now available.

Wulfmeier calls the sound of Leroy reminiscent of 1970s country with some American roots and southern rock thrown in for good measure. Songs include “Here in My Home,” “Locked Out” and “Fast Friends,” among others.

Each track off the debut EP relies on different musicians, with Wulfmeier taking care of lead vocals and the guitar. It’s a true mixture of talents and styles.

Wulfmeier brings with him a lot of experience to the new project. He has toured with the likes of Katy Rose, Brian Wright and Shelby Lynne. He was also a guitarist with the Wild Feathers and is currently a member of Dorothy.

Recently Hollywood Soapbox exchanged emails with Wulfmeier about Leroy From the North. Questions and answers have been slightly edited for style.

Where did the idea come from to start Leroy From the North?

I wanted to start a project with friends that I’ve worked with in other bands. I thought it would be fun to write a handful of songs and just see where they went with musicians I respect. I’ve always loved to write and sing, and the timing just seemed to work out. So that was the start of Leroy From the North.

Why did you select that band name?

The name Leroy From the North came about because I would often get asked if I was from the South. I guess it was mainly because I tend to play in a way that leans toward southern rock and country. My legal name is Leroy, and I grew up in Michigan. So it just made sense to me.

What can listeners expect on your five-song EP?

This five-song EP is a mix of styles ranging from straight-ahead rock to a more Americana/country/roots feel. I just liked the way the tunes paired together, and in my mind I felt like the different genres fit for this EP.

What inspired the song ‘Locked Out’?

‘Locked Out’ lyrically is a sort of clumsy love song that is awkward and self-deprecating. It’s based on someone looking back at a slightly dysfunctional relationship and weighing how it’s affected them. I liked the delicate feel of everyone’s playing on this one.

How would you define the band’s sound?

The overall sound varies on this EP as there are a few different players from song to song. There is a lot of big guitar-driven rock and some fun, country dancing ‘four on the floor’ vibe.

When did you first fall in love with music?

I fell in love with music as a kid, but it really solidified after my folks took me to see Bob Seger in Detroit. After that it was all over. It was a show I will never forget. I’m a big fan of his writing, and I’m grateful for that experience. It changed everything for me.

What’s the future hold for the band and you as a musician?

I’m excited for what’s to come for Leroy. We have a few shows booked for the summer, and then we are gearing up to release a full-length sometime late fall/early winter. Putting together tour dates in late spring most likely.
