INTERVIEW: Jack Serio-directed ‘Theda Bara’ play is back for encore run

On Set With Theda Bara, the intimate play written by Joey Merlo and starring David Greenspan, had an impossibly short run in 2023 at The Brick, but thankfully the theatrical séance is back for an entire month, this time running Feb. 6 to March 9 at the same venue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. In the show, Greenspan plays the silent film actor Theda Bara, in addition to other characters, all of whom participate in a séance. Audience members — numbering only 50 per evening — sit at the table with Greenspan, or they’re a few feet away on stools.

Jack Serio directs the unique production, which is co-presented by the Transport Group and Lucille Lortel Theatre. He’s a director increasingly known for his intimate, immersive theatrical journeys. In addition to On Set With Theda Bara, he staged a townhouse-staged Uncle Vanya in 2023.

To learn more about Serio’s project, check out this interview that Hollywood Soapbox conducted in 2023. In the talk, he opens up about working with Greenspan, a legend on the off-Broadway scene, and who exactly was this Bara figure in real life.
