Los Discorde — the rock band featuring Dante Alejandre (vocalist and guitarist), Gibran Perez (drums) and Ricardo Vázquez (synth and vocals) — has released a new single called “El Mar,” a song that serves as an ode to the sea. The Mexican rockers, who have been going strong for more than 10 years and originated in the city of Ixtapaluca, blend several different musical styles, including rock, funk, pop and synth rock, according to press notes.

Recently Vázquez exchanged emails with Hollywood Soapbox to offer thoughts on the new song and the band’s plans for the future. Spoiler alert: “El Mar,” out now from My Grito! Industries, will be part of a new EP. Questions and answers have been slightly edited for style.

What inspired the song “El Mar”?

The blend of ’80s sounds with powerful synthesizers and the love you have for that special person, and the sea is a reminder of that feeling.

What can fans expect from the rest of the EP? Any release date yet?

We don’t have a defined release date for the EP yet, but it will be packed with sounds that represent an era in the band, with lyrics that will remind you of self-love and love for those who matter to you.

Do you hope to tour the new songs around North America?

It’s what we would like the most, and soon we’ll be over there with new music and a tour.

How did the band first form in 2012?

Dante and Gibran formed the band when they were teenagers, as they were neighbors and shared a passion for music and performing on stage.

Would you say the band’s sound is closer to funk rock? How do you get those funky riffs?

We’ve always enjoyed constant change, and we found that feeling of celebration and good vibes in funk and riffs, with people who also enjoy that atmosphere.

Is there a strong rock scene in Ixtapaluca? Are you still based there?

Of course, in Ixtapaluca, there’s a very talented base of musicians, friends who are on tour in Europe and continue to follow the dream of playing. Most of our fans are from Ixtapaluca, and we’re always looking forward to an event to be with them.
