Recently Strange Snow, a new play by Stephen Metcalfe, ran at New York City’s Chain Theatre, courtesy of the Ivy Crest Theatre Co. The show follows the story of David, a Vietnam veteran who is living a quiet life with his sister, Martha, but then an old friend named Megs knocks on the front door, according to press notes. What this chance encounter unearths about David’s past history is what ultimately drives the play’s story.

Helping to bring Strange Snow to life at the Chain Theatre was director David Newer, whose previous credits include Eden End, The Blue Room and The Last Supper, among others. He’s also a teacher at the William Esper Studio in New York City. Joining him was James McCloskey, who acted in the show and serves as executive director of the Ivy Crest Theatre Co.

Recently Newer exchanged emails with Hollywood Soapbox about the run of Strange Snow, which ended in June. Proceeds from the play went to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation, according to an official news release. Questions and answers have been slightly edited for style.

What did you like when you first read Stephen Metcalfe’s play?

The relationships are so well-defined, the characters so rich. It gives actors tons to work with. As a director, it’s an exhilarating challenge to guide actors through that.

How does Megs disrupt the life of David and Martha?

Megs leads both of them down a path of thorns and briars. They both know they have to go there, but neither of them wants to. Davey goes kicking and screaming.

Why is it important to have proceeds go to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation?

Davey and Megs lost someone they had grown to love very much. Loved ones of those killed in the 9/11 attacks and any wars, including Vietnam, can relate to that. It is crucial that we honor all of them.

What has it been like working with Ivy Crest Theatre Co. and its executive director, James McCloskey?

It’s not my first time, having directed James in an Ivy Crest production 10 years ago. All of these actors trained with me at the Esper Studio. I couldn’t ask for a better cast. It’s an absolute pleasure.
