It’s always a choreographic thrill when the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater plays the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, New Jersey. The respected company has been bringing its intricate dance work to NJPAC every spring season for years, and 2025 is no exception. The Ailey dancers hit Downtown Newark, May 3-11.

This year, they are offering dance classes on May 3 and performances the following weekend, May 9-11. Some of the company’s most acclaimed repertory pieces will be showcased, including “Grace,” “Cry” and, of course, “Revelations.” One of the exciting additions is interim artistic director Matthew Rushing’s world premiere of “Sacred Songs.” The May 9 performance will also have a special pre-show panel discussion that celebrates the life and legacy of Judith Jamison, the legendary dancer and artistic director of the company, according to press notes.

For one dancer in particular, these NJPAC shows will be extra special. Chalvar Monteiro is from New Jersey, so the NJPAC shows are something of a homecoming for the performer. Recently Hollywood Soapbox exchanged emails with Monteiro, who is expected to perform in “Revelations” and “Sacred Songs” during the New Jersey engagement. Questions and answers have been slightly edited for style.

Has it been a dream come true to perform for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater?

It’s definitely a dream come true. To be up close to the work of Alvin Ailey and the opportunity to take those stories around the world is everything and more.

Are the NJPAC performances particularly special because you’re from New Jersey? Will you have family in the crowd?

My family and friends will be in the audience, which is always special. It also marks the end of a successful 18-city U.S. tour, meaning some well-deserved rest!

What has been the most challenging dance you’ve learned this year?

The most intricate dance from this season would be Jamar Roberts’ “Al-Andalus Blues.” His attention to detail and powerful movement vocabulary have been the most demanding for me.

What does the work “Revelations” mean to you?

“Revelations” has always felt like a sweet homecoming. Performing this work affords me a direct connection to Alvin Ailey and all of the dancers that have grown through this work since its premiere in 1960.

Does being on tour have any downsides?

While I enjoy touring, I miss my family and my dog quite a bit.

What’s it like working with Matthew Rushing and your fellow dancers?

It’s a joy to work with a group of gifted and generous people. It’s even more special to dance with people I’ve known for almost half of my life and feel like extended family. The entire team that makes the magic happen (stage management, crew, artistic staff, wardrobe, company management) are some of the coolest people I’ve ever met!
