Max Chernin, who appeared in Broadway’s Bright Star and Sunday in the Park With George, will bring a suite of songs, along with stories and odes to redhead actors, to his intimate show at The Green Room 42 in New York City. The Monday, June 25 concert is entitled The Color Ginger and will also feature the talents of Ryan Fielding Garrett, from Kinky Boots.

Chernin’s résumé extends beyond the Broadway stage and includes many interesting roles over the years. He has appeared in Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle and ABC’s The Family. Off-Broadway he has been featured in Brooklynite, The Golden Apple and Claudio Quest. He has also previously presented The Color Ginger at Studio 54.

Recently, Hollywood Soapbox exchanged emails with Chernin about the upcoming concert. Questions and answers have been slightly edited for style.

What can fans expect at The Color Ginger?

A joyous romp through my personal journey as a redhead! Songs, stories, historical evidence and nods to redheaded Broadway stars.

What’s it like to work with Ryan Fielding Garrett?

I’d be lost without him. He is so intuitive, precise and can groove in any style. That makes him the ideal partner for my show. And he’s a ginger!

Explain what was going through your mind the night of your Broadway debut.

Oh, so many things. It was thrilling for both me and the show. That was Bright Star’s first bow on Broadway (and Carmen Cusack, too!), and I was so proud to have been with it for the bulk of its journey.

Have you had a love for theater and singing since you were a child?

Indeed. I started young, around 7 or so, doing community theatre and never stopped. The choir, a cappella groups, I was singing and acting in everything I could.

What’s on the horizon for you?

A vacation? Nothing major on the docket right now! Enjoying this time to create and share some work of my own.
