Ensemble Studio Theatre and the Radio Drama Network are staying busy over the next couple of weeks with a festival of one-act plays. This year’s offerings consist of 15 new works by such playwrights as Lloyd Suh and Susan Kim.

Amy Fox’s I’m So Sorry, directed by Morgan Gould, is part of Series A, which continues until Saturday, June 1.

Fox is an accomplished writer for both the stage and film. She penned the screenplay for the Sundance film Equity, which was distributed by Sony Pictures Classics in 2016. Her plays have been produced by EST, Clubbed Thumb and other companies around the world.

Recently Hollywood Soapbox exchanged emails with Fox about I’m So Sorry. Questions and answers have been slightly edited for style.

What is your play about?

I’m Sorry is a satire that explores where we have landed with the #MeToo movement. In the play, three women work for a company that writes apologies for men who’ve been accused of sexual misconduct. Over the course of a particularly challenging day, each woman comes to her own conclusion that this work is not worth the personal toll that it is taking on them, and they come together to reject a VIP client.

Is writing a short play easier?

I find it much easier. It’s a chance to explore an idea and a tone that may not be sustainable in a longer piece.

What’s it like working at EST?

EST has been my artistic home since 1998. I found incredible mentorship there early in my career, and I love continuing to work with a company that is so committed to developing new work.

When did you realize you had a talent for writing?

Recently I came across a play I had written in third grade. The first scene was a girl and her mom making a lemon pie. In the second scene the lemons started talking to each other, so I guess that was when it all started.
