One of the most celebrated documentaries of the year, Folktales, is now available on demand and on streaming platforms. The film, directed by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, takes a deep dive into an alternative high school experience in Norway where students come closer to nature and learn about folk traditions.
Recently Hollywood Soapbox talked with Ewing in a Zoom interview about the new film, which continues hers and Grady’s fascination with coming-of-age stories around the globe.
“I had never heard about folk high schools,” Ewing said. “I had never been to Norway, and I read the autobiography of an American dogsledder named Blair Braverman, who I heard on a podcast. … And the second chapter of her book, Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube, she said … she was in California, and she was dreaming of the Arctic for some reason. She went to a folk high school at 17 in the north, and she studied dog sledding. And it changed her life.”
