Manolo Caro’s new movie, Tales of an Immoral Couple, centers on a relationship that began in a Catholic high school and has now spilled over into adulthood. Cecilia Suárez plays Martina, and Manuel García-Rulfo plays Lucio. They once fell in love during the strict times of their Catholic upbringing, but they haven’t seen each other for years. When they run into each other once again, their long-lost love is put to the test.

In the movie, which is released Friday, Aug. 25 in theaters, Ximena Romo plays the younger Martina, and Sebastián Aguirre plays the younger Lucio. Recently, Hollywood Soapbox exchanged emails with Romo about Tales of an Immoral Couple. Questions and answers have been slightly edited for style.

Did you have to work closely with Cecilia Suárez, the actress who plays the adult Martina?

Yes. Manolo Caro, the director, had both couples, past and present, rehearse together before shooting so that we would talk about the characters, watch it each other work and do a couple of exercises. In my case, I’ve always admired Cecilia’s work, so I also saw it as an opportunity to learn from her as much as I could. She was very generous with me, and I really did learn a lot.

The film was a huge success in Mexico. Why do you think Tales of an Immoral Couple has received so much interest from audience members?
I believe the movie has appealed so much because it talks about that essence of the teenage years where you feel free and bold, and that even when society puts obstacles to your dreams, love can prevail and that magic can still came back to your life.
What was it like filming in San Miguel de Allende? Was it a particularly difficult shoot?
No, filming in San Miguel was an absolute joy. The place is magical, and we were really privileged to work there. The difficulty came really when we had to shoot in the old building where our characters made their own space, but we actually shot in a building that was falling apart. So you had to be careful where you stepped, and the dirt got everywhere jaja.
What was it like working with director Manolo Caro?
I loved working with him because he always tried to make the set feel safe and enjoyable. He always knows what he wants, and the fact that he wrote the script as well made it easy for us to know where we had to go with each scene. I think he has a very distinctive point of view, filled with a good sense of humor and a lot of class.
What’s next for you? What’s on the horizon?

This year I’ve been in involved in a couple of movies that will probably come out next year. One is a black comedy directed by Mark Alasraky and Fernando Rovzar. Then there’s a romantic comedy where I play Maite Perroni’s sister and a few low-budget films that are still in the making.

I’m really just trying to expand the horizons now, trying as much as I can wherever the opportunities come.
